Sol y Sazón – Brand Identity Case Study

Sol Y Sazón is a modern brand identity inspired by vibrant colors, and welcoming spirit of Latin cuisine. This concept rebrand was created to capture the warmth, authenticity, and energy of the brand through a cohesive visual system that feels memorable and versatile across packaging, social media, and print.

Objective

The objective of this project was to challenge myself by creating a complete brand identity for a restaurant—an industry I hadn't previously explored in depth. I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone and develop a versatile branding system that could seamlessly extend across menus, packaging, merchandise, social media, and environmental graphics while maintaining a cohesive visual identity.

Approach

I began this project by researching Mexican restaurant branding to better understand common visual trends, customer expectations, and opportunities to create something distinctive. Rather than relying on traditional clichés, I focused on capturing the warmth, vibrancy, and welcoming atmosphere that make local restaurants like Ramos Cafe so memorable.

From there, I developed mood boards, explored typography and color palettes inspired by Mexican culture, and sketched multiple logo concepts before refining the final identity. Every design decision was made with versatility in mind, ensuring the brand could be applied consistently across menus, packaging, merchandise, social media, and promotional materials.

Throughout the process, I challenged myself to think beyond creating a logo and instead build a complete brand system—one that tells a story, creates a memorable customer experience, and can grow alongside the business.

“Sol y Sazón,” meaning Sun and Seasoning, became the foundation of the visual concept.

The identity draws inspiration from:

  • Desert landscapes and natural textures

  • The intensity and warmth of sunlight

  • Traditional Mexican patterns and symbolism

  • Organic forms found in nature

This combination led to a direction that is both earthy and refined, blending bold cultural references with a contemporary design approach.

Concept & Direction

Outcome

The final identity positions Sol y Sazón as a modern, design-forward restaurant that honors cultural inspiration while appealing to a contemporary audience.

The system is scalable, cohesive, and versatile, designed to function seamlessly across print, digital, and environmental applications.

Takeaway

This project highlights the importance of:

  • Building a flexible system, not just a logo

  • Deriving supporting elements directly from core brand shapes

  • Using restraint to create a more elevated, timeless aesthetic

The result is a brand that is recognizable, scalable, and adaptable across real-world applications—from packaging to environmental design.

Ultimately, Sol y Sazón is about translating the warmth and richness of Mexican cuisine into a visual language that feels contemporary, intentional, and enduring.
